{"id":1051,"date":"2014-05-12T12:32:37","date_gmt":"2014-05-12T16:32:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.asapofanderson.org\/?p=1051"},"modified":"2014-05-12T12:32:37","modified_gmt":"2014-05-12T16:32:37","slug":"12th-graders-perceived-risk-of-marijuana-use-at-lowest-level-since-1978","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asapofanderson.org\/es\/12th-graders-perceived-risk-of-marijuana-use-at-lowest-level-since-1978\/","title":{"rendered":"12th Graders Perceived Risk of Marijuana Use at Lowest Level Since 1978"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the most recent data from the national Monitoring the Future (MTF) study, the percentage of 12<sup>th<\/sup> grade students who perceive regular marijuana use to be a great risk continues to decrease.\u00a0 After peaking in the early 1990s, the perceived risk of physical or other harm from regular marijuana use decreased for a few years, and then leveled off for a decade before beginning to decline again in 2007.\u00a0 From 2005 to 2013, the percent of 12<sup>th<\/sup> graders seeing great risk from being a regular marijuana user has fallen from 58 percent to 40 percent.\u00a0 That is the lowest point since the record low of 35 percent in 1978.<\/p>\n<p>Today, 1 in 15 (6.5%) of high school seniors is a daily or near-daily marijuana smoker.\u00a0 Another interesting finding this year is that of the 12<sup>th<\/sup> graders who say they have used marijuana in the past 12 months and live in a state that has passed medical marijuana laws, 34 percent say one of their sources for marijuana is another person\u2019s medical marijuana prescription.\u00a0 And, 6 percent say they get it from their own prescription.\u00a0 It thus appears that state medical marijuana laws provide an additional avenue of accessibility to the drug for teens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asapofanderson.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/12-graders-marijuana-blog.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1052 aligncenter\" alt=\"12 graders marijuana blog\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asapofanderson.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/12-graders-marijuana-blog-300x128.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Percentage of U.S. 12<sup>th<\/sup> Grade Students Who Perceive a Great Risk of Harm (Physical or other) from Regular Marijuana Use, 1975-2013*<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0*This questions was \u201cHow much do you think people risk harming themselves (physically or in other ways) if they smoke marijuana regularly?\u201d\u00a0 The available responses were: 1) no risk, 2) slight risk, 3 moderate risk, 4) great risk, and 5: can\u2019t say, drug unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>SOURCE: \u00a0Adapted by CESAR and ASAP from University of Michigan, \u201cAmerican Teens More Cautious About Using Synthetic Drugs,\u201d <i>Monitoring the Future National Press Release<\/i>, December 18, 2013.
